Video: DJ Premier – REMY RAP feat. Remy Ma & Rapsody

Rapsody and DJ Premier connected for the music video of their joint project, “REMY RAP.” The trio recreates the atmosphere and beauty of the culture’s golden age in the nearly three-minute clip. “REMY RAP” is the first song from Premo and Mass Appeal’s Hip Hop 50 Volume 1 effort, and it features the two spitters swapping lines that make references to their poetic prowess.

In her introductory stanza, Remy Ma criticises the dearth of strong female emcees, rhyming, “It’s only like five females in the game that can really rap/Got followers and fame and a name so they thinking that” over the DJ Premier-created background music. Rapsody uses a series of metaphors in the next stanza, comparing her delivery to a speeding bullet and spitting forth clever couplets.

Remy and Rap kept things current while paying homage to the past by switching from the NHL jerseys that were fashionable in the 1990s to the Gucci-printed bucket hats that ruled the decade before. The “REMY RAP” video, which was unveiled on the annual Hip-Hop birth anniversary, is the most recent installment in Mass Appeal’s Hip Hop 50 programme, which honours the first 50 years of the culture.
