Video: Mary J. Blige – Good Morning Gorgeous

Mary J. Blige discussed her upcoming album in a recent conversation with Tamron Hall, in which they both participated.

She said, “I’m not arrogant at all. I don’t consider myself to be arrogant, but I have worked hard to earn the right to say some things. I have worked hard enough to be able to say, “I feel amazing.” When I get out of bed in the morning with no hair or makeup on, I’m going to accept that chick who uses the restroom, and I’m going to like her. I spend a lot of time with just the two of us. I am the best friend to myself.”

This message is used as the basis for “Good Morning Gorgeous,” the debut single and music video from the new project, and it also features in the song. Stunning photos show the singer, who is 50 years old, luxuriating in complete happiness as she is shown wearing lingerie and furry thigh-high boots in bed at sunrise, standing poolside in a bikini with a tropical print, and sitting in an empty bathtub in a glittering bikini while sipping her Sun Goddess wine.

The song is a monument to darker times, when the artist felt they were unattractive and alone in the world. Mary sings in the second stanza, “All the times that I hated myself/All the times that I wanted to be someone else/All the times that I should’ve been gentle with me/All the times that I should’ve been careful with me/Why did I hate myself so intensely?” Why did Mary hate herself so intensely? The tune eventually focuses on maturation and coming to terms with oneself before leading into the chorus and bridge.
