Video: Prophet – Wanna Be Your Man

Where has the 1980s funk musician Prophet been since the release of Right On Time in 1984? The record currently fetches hundreds of dollars in record stores.

Wanna Be Your Man is Prophet’s first album in 30 years, and he recently travelled from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Los Angeles, California, to record it. For those of you who remember him, this move may come as a surprise. This project includes three new renditions of classic Right On Time songs in addition to seven brand new compositions.

On Wednesday (June 20), the singer made the world premiere of the music video for the title track of the funk-infused R&B album. The music video was produced in-house, with label-mate Sudan Archives, a one-woman band that blends R&B vocals, Northeast African violin figures, and hip-hop beats, both co-directing and making a cameo appearance in the video.

In a press release, Prophet stated that their collaboration with Sudan had been “beautiful.” “She is an attractive and accomplished artist, and I admire the ideas that she comes up with. It was a pleasure to work with her, and I hope to do so again. In an emotional sense, the song “Wanna Be Your Man” is about how I want to be all the ladies’ guy. And it’s not about any of my personal past relationships; on the contrary, it’s about relationships I don’t have, which is why I want to be your man. “And it’s not about any of my specific past relationships; rather, it’s about relationships I don’t have.”
