Video: Skyzoo – Bed-Stuy is Burning

People that live in Brooklyn, New York have a specific amount of pride that is recognized all over the world. The phrase “Brooklyn’s In The House” describes a way of life that is prevalent in the borough of Kings and in the most recent music video released by BK rep Skyzoo for the song “Bed-Stuy Is Burning,” which also features Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. In it, he discusses the passing of the “Old Brooklyn” neighborhood. The track and accompanying music video are the first single to be released off ‘Zoo’s next album, All the Brilliant Things, which will be released on June 11 by FGR/Mellow Music Group.

After having previously discussed the topic of cultural shifts on earlier tracks, Skyzoo changes the narrative to warn other black-dominated communities about the gentrification that has taken place in his beloved Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Spike Lee, winner of an Academy Award for Best Director and a legend in the industry, grew up in this section of Brooklyn, which is also known as the birthplace of Lil’ Kim, Notorious BIG, and Jay-Z.

Even after shifting some of the living spaces, Skyzoo is still BK at its core. Growing up in Brooklyn shaped him into the rapper that he is today, and now he wants his son to understand what it means to have Brooklyn pride, despite the fact that the borough has undergone significant transformations since he was a child. People like ‘Zoo keep the enthusiasm going even though it seems to have died off. The following is a transcription of his words that explain the feeling:

“Storytelling, motivation, and reflection have always been components of my musical style, and they’ve always been combined. I tell stories that speak on the motives of those I grew up with and why they are such, and then I reflect on how the things that happened influenced us all, both my inner circle and, subconsciously, the lister. I tell stories that speak on the motives of individuals I grew up with because it helps me understand why they are the way they are.
