SZA is back with a new track called “The Anonymous Ones,” and while it may not be connected to a new album release from the First Lady of Top Dawg Entertainment, it does mark her return. The song, which was released earlier this month and is taken from the soundtrack to the movie Dear Evan Hansen, fits into the same style as the rest of her repertoire, in which she sings about navigating life and relationships as a young lady in her 20s.

IMDb describes the plot of the coming-of-age musical drama Dear Evan Hansen as following Hansen, a high school senior who struggles with social anxiety disorder and feelings of isolation, “on his journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate.” Dear Evan Hansen is a coming-of-age musical drama.
SZA is depicted in the music video for “The Anonymous Ones” as a starving artist who lives in a huge city and strives to make it big there. Before she sets out on her trip, the first thing that we see her doing is writing in her journal. She travels the bus while remaining remarkably unperturbed by the other passengers, just like the majority of creative people in major cities do. Even if there are swarms of people buzzing quickly around the vocalist, Director Colin Tilley will make sure to maintain the singer in the center of attention.
Even though she isn’t getting the attention that she wants, her anonymity is momentarily diminished when another struggling creative person notices her sitting on a park bench and the two of them exchange silent glances with each other.
