The fifth studio album and first album in the English language by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, Laundry Service (Spanish: Servicio de Lavandería), was released worldwide by Epic Records on November 13, 2001. American singer Gloria Estefan encouraged Shakira to record songs in English after her fourth studio album, Dónde Están los Ladrones?, became successful in Latin America, Spain, the Middle East, and the Latin community in the United States. Gloria Estefan thought her friend had the potential to break into the English-language pop market. Though first hesitant, Shakira made the decision to become proficient in English so that she could compose songs in the language.

Shakira’s opinions about love and music are reflected in the album’s title. In January 2002, it was made available as Servicio de Lavandería in Spanish-speaking areas. While pop rock is the album’s primary genre, Laundry Service also veers into dance-pop, rock & roll, tango, Andean, and Middle Eastern music. The concept of the album is romance and love. Under Emilio Estefan’s direction, Shakira wrote and produced every song on it.
