Video: Jorja Smith – On Your Own
In the music video for “On My Own,” which is styled after children’s picture books, Jorja Smith takes her audience on an adventure. The “Blue Lights” singer’s debut album, titled Lost and Found, was met with acclaim from music critics and debuted at position No. 3 on the UK album charts. “On My Own” was taken from that album and released as a single.
The Rashid Babiker visual features a girl who is visibly restless and stumbles into a Jorja Smith picture book that is a vibrant shade of red. As the young girl begins to go through the book, she notices that the very first page contains the words “Return On or Before.” Badiker, who is credited with directing Smith’s “Teenage Fantasy,” had the intention of making a music video for Jorja during her Lost & Found period that is “set a bit further into the future.”
The graphics created by the Lost and Found vocalist come to life and each convey a different kind of story. These photographs, which were bound together to form a book, show various abstract depictions of Smith in a vulnerable state. Both the song and its artwork do an excellent job of capturing the spirit of an artist like Jorja Smith, while also making a striking statement about the impact that an artist of Smith’s quality will continue to have on the music industry long after she has left the business.
